Crime rates in Wells decline across multiple categories in March

The latest monthly crime statistics for Wells City indicate a notable decrease in reported incidents for March 2024, with the overall number of crimes falling from 98 in February to 73.

Breakdown of Crime Categories:

  • Anti-social Behaviour: Incidents decreased from 9 in February to 7 in March. This category typically includes behaviours that cause nuisance, annoyance, or distress to people.
  • Bicycle Theft: There were 2 cases reported, highlighting a specific issue with bicycle security in the area.
  • Burglary: A significant reduction was seen in this category, from 8 incidents in February to just 1 in March. Burglary involves entering a building unlawfully with the intent to commit a crime.
  • Criminal Damage and Arson: Incidents decreased from 6 to 5. This category covers damage to property, including deliberate fires.
  • Other Theft: Reduced slightly from 8 to 3 cases. This includes thefts not classified under more specific categories like shoplifting or vehicle crime.
  • Public Order: These incidents decreased from 11 in February to 5 in March, involving activities that disrupt public peace or create fear.
  • Robbery: Remained steady with 1 incident recorded. Robbery involves theft using force or threat of force.
  • Shoplifting: Increased slightly, from 15 to 17 incidents, indicating ongoing challenges with thefts in retail settings.
  • Vehicle Crime: Saw a reduction from 5 incidents in February to just 1 in March. This category includes theft of or from vehicles and damage to vehicles.
  • Violent Crime: Remained nearly constant with 31 incidents, compared to 30 in February. This includes crimes where individuals are harmed or threatened with harm.

A police spokesperson said: "The reduction in crime across multiple categories is encouraging and reflects the targeted efforts by our officers and the active engagement of the Wells community. "

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help maintain the downward trend in crime rates.
