Crime falls slightly in Wells in January despite rise in violent offences

Police recorded 97 crimes in Wells during January 2026, according to the latest published crime statistics.
The figure represents a small drop from the 101 offences recorded in December 2025, a decrease of four incidents month on month.
Violent crime remained the most frequently recorded category in the city. There were 41 violent offences reported in January, compared with 36 in December.
Shoplifting was the second most common category but fell noticeably between the two months. Police recorded 24 shoplifting incidents in December, dropping to 14 in January.
Public order offences also rose slightly, increasing from seven incidents in December to 10 in January.
Anti social behaviour fell from 11 incidents in December to eight in January.
Burglary also dropped sharply, with six offences recorded in December compared with one in January.
Criminal damage and arson decreased from nine incidents in December to five in January.
Other categories recorded during January included five robberies, five incidents of other theft, four drugs offences, one bicycle theft, one vehicle crime and two offences recorded under other crime.
Overall crime in Wells fell slightly month on month, although violent crime and public order offences both increased during the same period.
