A serious crash shut the A39 outside Wells Cathedral School for more than three hours yesterday, bringing traffic to a standstill through the city centre.

The incident, which happened shortly before 4pm on Tuesday 22 April, saw New Street closed in both directions between Old Bristol Road and the school gates, causing heavy delays on either side of the closure.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the crash involved two vehicles.

One person was treated at the scene and left in the care of the ambulance service.

A police spokesperson said: "At around 3.45pm today, officers were called to a two-vehicle collision on the A39 New Street, in Wells. One person was left in the care of the ambulance service. The road was closed while emergency services responded and for the cars to be recovered and debris cleared."

Emergency services remained at the scene for several hours as police and recovery teams worked to clear the wreckage. By 7.15pm, the road had reopened, and traffic began to ease.
