Cops flood Wells High Street after shoplifting surge

Shoplifters in Wells are being put on notice — after police stepped up patrols in the city centre in response to rising thefts from local stores.
Wells High Street has now been officially named a priority zone under Avon and Somerset Police's Neighbourhood Guarantee, meaning more boots on the ground and a zero-tolerance approach to retail crime.
Business owners recently met with police to share their concerns and push for more action. Since then, high-visibility patrols have been out in force — aiming to put would-be thieves off, reassure shoppers and build a stronger relationship between officers and retailers.
An update from the local force confirmed the patrols are ongoing and more anti-theft initiatives are in the pipeline.
"We're working closely with local businesses to address the issue," said a spokesperson. "Together, we're making Wells a safer place to live, work and shop."
Police are urging shop owners to keep reporting incidents, either online or via 101, to help them target the areas most at risk.
Further updates on new crime prevention measures are expected in the coming weeks.
