The City of Wells Lions is inviting teams of friends and workmates to take part in the 2024 Wells Moat Boat Races.

The challenge is to build a raft and race it on The Bishop's Palace moat.

The Lions assure potential participants that raft building is not as daunting as it may seem. They point out that the Mendip Activity Centre offers two-hour courses in raft building for those needing guidance.

The 2024 Moat Boat Races are scheduled for August Bank Holiday Monday, August 26. The event will feature races for juniors and adults, fun races, and special awards, including best-dressed crew. All proceeds from the event will be donated to local charitable organisations by the City of Wells Lions.

Application packs, including regulations and raft specifications, are available on the new boat race website: www.wellsmoatboatrace.com or from the City of Wells Lions via email: [email protected].

Key details for participants include:

  • Maximum crew size: six (teams up to eight)
  • Minimum age to participate: 13 years by Monday, August 26, 2024
  • Limited entries per race: first come, first served

Those interested in volunteering to help run the races can also contact the City of Wells Lions via email at [email protected] or by calling 0345 833 6736.
