A significant change is on the horizon for a prominent Wells High Street property, initially earmarked to become a kebab shop.

New plans to transform the Grade II listed building into 'Mendip Jewellers Wells,' a family-run jewellery store have now been submitted to Somerset Council.

Located at 78 High Street, the site has previously hosted a Subway restaurant and was vacant for some time before receiving approval last year to be developed into a kebab shop.

78 High Street in Wells has been empty since Subway moved out of the city.

However, a shift in plans has led to a fresh application submitted to Somerset Council, proposing a completely different direction for this historic location.

The planned renovations aim to blend modern security enhancements with the building's rich historical character. The updates include installing reinforced security glass and a robust, updated entrance door that integrates seamlessly with the building's existing architectural features. Careful modifications to the shopfront and entrance will replicate the original display windows and restore the original column mouldings, ensuring the building's heritage remains intact.

78 High Street has served various roles since its establishment in the 1880s by Edwin Crease as a tea and provision merchant. It has since housed numerous businesses, including Wells Motor Parts until 2007 and later a fast-food outlet. The upcoming transformation includes plans to revive a painted advertisement on the side of the building, reflecting its commercial heritage and adding to the aesthetic appeal of the premises.
