Caught on camera: The Ghosts of Wookey Hole Caves

A team of paranormal investigators have claimed to have heard the voice of the Witch of Wookey Hole while ghost-hunting in the caves.

Paranormal investigator Tony Ferguson, and his team of ghost-hunters – his wife Bev, 59, and investigators Debbie McAll, 51, and Emily Cowell, 38, of Ghost2Ghost – went into the caves led by tour guide Jamie Russell, but were left spooked after claiming they heard the hissing voice of the witch, as well as children's voices, and a male voice calling out to them.

With 45,000 years worth of history, it's probably not surprising that the caves are said to be haunted - and human bones found in chamber 4 have only added to the legends. The ghost of a cave diver - Gordon Marriott, who drowned in 1949 - is said to roam the chambers. The spirit of a child who died on the site has also been seen.

Of course, the most famous spirit connected to the caves is that of the witch, who is believed to still reside over the caves and protects them from anyone who enters who has less than honourable intent.

Her remains have been found inside the cave, alongside her were the remains of a goat, an alabaster ball, some household items and a dagger. She has been seen in many areas and seems to dislike those who are angry or troubled.

Others have reported voices echoing through the caves when no one else was around, while other claim to have heard sound that are 'non-human.'

Figures have been seen throughout the caves, some looking as real as the living, but cannot be accounted for and others are like mists or steam in certain areas.

Tony said: We visited Wookey Hole with a paranormal events team called Ghost2Ghost Paranormal investigations in 2022.

"Debbie Mcall and Emily Cowell from Ghost2Ghost were calling out to the witch of Wookey Hole and we all heard a female voice saying 'Come to me then," hissing and even telling us to get out."

The group also say they heard the sound of a child laughing.

Returning to the caves a month later for a second investigation, Mr Ferguson asked a sceptic to call out in the caves.

In response, they heard the sound of young children - in the deserted caves at 1am.

Speaking about his experiences, Mr Ferguson said: "As a child I had many paranormal encounters in my grandad's house where I used to see a figure of a man wearing a suit.

"I also used to hear a little girl in the house struggling to breathe. As I got older I decided to try and find out what I experienced as a child and I decided to start investigating haunted locations throughout the UK to see if I can document any evidence on camera of things that can't be explained.

"I have been doing this now for over 10 years and have experienced many unexplained things and all of this has been documented on camera - like the voices at Wookey Hole.

"What we encountered shocked us as many voices were in the caves with us. Even though we were all together we heard children's voices and male and female calling out to us and responding to us on command. Whatever is in the caves is intelligent."
