A new walking trail in a less travelled but beautiful part of Somerset is now open to the public.

The Castles and Coast Way is a 13-mile circular footpath which runs from Nether Stowey to Stogursey and on to the Somerset coast at Shurton Bars.

The route links the Coleridge Way to the England Coast Path National Trail, which will eventually run around the coast of England.

The trail originated from a request from members of Stogursey Parish Council to establish a promoted walking route in the area.

An opening event was held in Shurton, Stogursey earlier today with the ribbon being cut by David Fothergill, the Leader of Somerset County Council. He said "This part of Somerset may not be the most well-known, but it has plenty to offer; the archaeology, geology, natural history, ecology and, of course, the beautiful landscape.

"This new walk takes in stunning views of the Quantock and Mendip Hills, Exmoor, the Bristol Channel and Wales and other far reaching views across Somerset. It is a great honour to confirm the opening of this trail today."

Councillor Fothergill was joined at the opening by Ramblers from West Somerset and Sedgemoor, and David Eccles, head of Stakeholder Engagement at EDF Energy.

The development of the trail was made possible through Section 106 funding for rights of way from EDF Energy.

Mr Eccles said "Hinkley Point C was delighted to provide some funding for the new 13-mile walking trail, part of which runs along the western edge of the site.

"I'm sure some of the workforce will take advantage of the trail which runs adjacent to our on-site accommodation campus."

The walk can be completed as a day walk or undertaken in smaller sections which lend themselves to easier circular walks. The route is well signposted with the Castles and Coast Way logo and there is a free accompanying booklet to guide you on the trail.
