A major route to Castle Cary railway station will stay closed until the summer holidays as long-running roadworks continue.

The B3152 Station Road, between Almsford Close and Victoria Gardens, is now expected to remain shut until Friday, 31 July.

Contractor Crestmoors had originally been due to finish the repairs on 1 July.

The works relate to a sinkhole and wider repairs on the route, close to where Persimmon Homes Severn Valley has been building 162 homes, commercial space and a new primary school.

Somerset Council put temporary traffic lights on the affected stretch in July 2024 as a short-term safety measure for drivers and pedestrians.

The council confirmed in February that permanent repair work would be carried out, alongside other repairs and resurfacing in the same part of Castle Cary.

Cllr Henry Hobhouse, one of the Liberal Democrat councillors for the Castle Cary division, said the closure had now been extended from 1 July to the end of the month.

He said: "They have now started to put in the new ducting; this has exposed the sewer that has been damaged by the housing estate next door.

"To mend this when the road is open has caused the extension of the closure."

The works also include improvements to an existing culvert under the road, which carries a local stream away from the Fairfield public open space.

Cllr Hobhouse added that the number of services in the area was likely to increase costs, with a gas pipe needing support where it had been left hanging in the sinkhole.

Until the repairs are finished, traffic south of Castle Cary heading for the railway station is being diverted along Torbay Road, near the Crown Pet Foods factory, then along Blackworthy Road and the B3153 Station Road.

The diversion could add up to ten minutes to journeys.

Rail passengers heading from the station to Castle Cary town centre should follow the same diversion in reverse, use the A371 Ansford Hill to enter the town from the east, or use the pedestrian route south of the station.

Full details of roadworks in Castle Cary are available through Somerset Council's roadworks and travel page.

The council is also expected to announce shortly when a bus route linking the railway station with Glastonbury and neighbouring villages will begin running.
