Breast Cancer Awareness Month: What it means for women in Wells
By Laura Linham
8th Oct 2024 | Local News
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time to raise awareness about the importance of screening, early detection, and regular self-checks. Every year, breast screening is estimated to prevent around 1,300 deaths from breast cancer in the UK by identifying cancers at an earlier stage when treatment is most effective. This October, women in Wells are being encouraged to take advantage of the local NHS breast screening services.
Early detection saves lives
Early diagnosis is key—when caught early, 98% of women survive their breast cancer for five years or more. This is why regular screening is so important. Screening can often detect cancers before any visible or physical symptoms appear, making it a powerful tool in combating the disease.
Who can access free screening?
In Wells, women aged 50 to 71 are automatically invited for free NHS breast screening every three years. Invitations usually start around a woman's 53rd birthday. If you have missed a recent screening or didn't book an appointment when invited, you can still get in touch with your local NHS breast screening service to arrange a check-up, no matter how long ago the invitation was sent.
Where to get screened in Wells
For residents of Wells, breast screening services are available at nearby locations, including Yeovil District Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. Occasionally, mobile screening units are set up in convenient community spaces, so keep an eye out for these local opportunities.
Stay breast aware
Screening is important, but it's not the only way to stay on top of your health. Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel can help you spot any changes early. Look out for unusual lumps, changes in size or shape, alterations in skin texture, nipple discharge, or persistent pain.
It's essential to keep checking your breasts even if you have regular mammograms, as screening cannot detect all breast cancers. If you notice any changes, don't delay—contact your GP as soon as possible.

Let's use this Breast Cancer Awareness Month as a reminder to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. Spread the word, book your screenings, and stay informed. Early detection saves lives.
