Boris Johnson made an unscheduled stop in Wells this lunchtime (November 14) after his planned visit to Glastonbury was cancelled on safety grounds by the police.

The Prime Minister had been scheduled to visit Burns the Bread's factory in Glastonbury, but after around a hundred people turned up to protest, the police advised that it was not safe to arrive because there was only one entrance to the premises.

Instead, the leader of the Conservative Party re-routed to Wells, where he helped serve a handful of customers at the Burns the Bread shop in Queen Street, before taking a walk up the High Street with the Conservative candidate for the Wells Constituency, James Heappey.

Speaking to Wells Nub News after Mr Johnson had continued with his itinerary, Mr Heappey said: "It was fantastic to have the Prime Minister here, to see the area and to lend his support to the campaign here.

"It is really unfortunate that we had to change locations, but the decision was made by the police and we have to follow their lead.

"It is gutting for Bob Burns, who was looking forward to showing us his bakery school, which is still a new venture for him.

"However, the Prime Minister was still able to serve a few customers in the Wells shop, and we were able to take a stroll up and down the High Street.

"We are in a scrap here in the Wells Constituency, make no mistake, but I am feeling confident and I am getting good feedback from people on the doorsteps who just want to get Brexit done.

"The Brexit Party not standing here will no doubt help, but we are in for a battle and I am enjoying it."

In the Wells Constituency, former MP Tessa Munt is standing for the Liberal Democrats and Kama McKenzie is standing for the Labour Party.
