Bishop of Bath and Wells playing historic role at Coronation
The Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Revd Michael Beasley, has been named as one of the 13 individuals who will play a key role in the upcoming Coronation of Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort on 6 May.
Bishop Michael, alongside the Rt Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham, will serve as Bishop Assistant to The King.
The Cabinet Office made the announcement on Sunday, 9 April. All those selected to play a role in the Coronation were chosen based on their evidence of a historic customary service performed at previous Coronations and their established office or title to perform the task.
Expressing his gratitude at being chosen to play such a pivotal role, Bishop Michael said, "I am deeply honoured that as the Bishop of Bath and Wells I will have the privilege of supporting of His Majesty King Charles and Her Majesty the Queen Consort during the service of Coronation. It is a truly historic moment and humbling to realise that this continues a tradition dating back to Richard I in 1189."
Bishop Michael went on to highlight the significance of the occasion and how the church community in Bath and Wells will be marking the event with celebration services, community events, and volunteering. "The church family in Bath and Wells will be praying for their Majesties as we approach the Coronation and marking event itself," he added.
The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort is set to be a momentous occasion steeped in tradition and history. With Bishop Michael among those playing a key role in the service, the people of Bath and Wells and the wider community are sure to be watching with pride and excitement
The Coronation service will begin at 11am on Saturday, May 6 at Westminster Abbey, followed by a weekend of events, including a concert at Windsor Castle.
