Avon and Somerset Police are ramping up efforts to combat a spike in shoplifting incidents in Wells, reflecting a broader increase observed across the region and nationally.

The police have noted a particular rise in cases involving threats or violence.

"We take thefts from shops seriously and encourage store workers to report incidents, especially when threats or violence is used," said a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police.

"We're encouraged by increased reporting, as previously, shop theft has been significantly under-reported."

In line with the National Police Chiefs' Council's Retail Crime Action Plan, introduced in October 2023, the police are prioritising incidents where there is immediate danger or a need for swift evidence collection.

Efforts to streamline the reporting process have been enhanced, including the ability to report online and upload relevant CCTV and statements swiftly.

Wells has seen 192 reported thefts from shops in the past 18 months, representing less than 3.5 per cent of all shop theft in Somerset.

However, almost 12 per cent of these incidents leading to positive outcomes such as charges or out-of-court disposals.

"Last week, we arrested and subsequently charged a man with eight offences, three of which were thefts from supermarkets in Wells," the police spokesperson added.

The police are also working closely with local businesses to prevent thefts. This includes issuing civil banning letters to known offenders and utilising Anti-Social Behaviour legislation to enforce restrictions on repeat offenders.

"Our neighbourhood policing team is available to work with stores' staff and security teams to offer safety advice," the spokesperson continued.

"Where repeat and prolific offenders have been identified, officers encourage shops to issue civil banning letters, which, if ignored, can provide evidence to enable action to be taken under Anti-Social Behaviour legislation."
