A39 Glastonbury Road to go one‑way for seven weeks from 8 September

From Monday 8 September to Tuesday 28 October, the A39 Glastonbury Road in Wells will operate as a one‑way route only.
Motorists entering Wells from the Glastonbury direction will continue as normal. However, all traffic leaving Wells along the A39 must follow a diversion: via the A371 to Shepton Mallet, then on the A361 to Glastonbury. The affected stretch lies between the junction with Jocelyn Drive and the Strawberry Way roundabout. The work includes upgrades to water, power and gas infrastructure, alongside resurfacing of the road.
Somerset Council has confirmed that these temporary traffic restrictions are necessary to enable essential utility improvements and to ensure long‑term structural integrity of the road. Drivers and local businesses are advised to plan journeys accordingly, especially during peak hours, to allow for the longer diversion route.
Travel delays are likely. Leave extra time and follow official diversion signs to avoid disruption.
