Wells City secure semi-final place with late cup upset against Bridgwater Town

Wells City 3 Bridgwater Town 0

A brilliant second half performance from First Division side Wells City gave them a well deserved passage into the semi-finals of the Somerset Premier Cup as they overwhelmed their rivals Premiership outfit Bridgwater Town with the 3-0 score line which in no way flattered the city lads.

The first half had been fairly scrappy and fairly evenly balanced but after the break the Wells City midfield trio of Charlie Crook, Dale Hunt and Ben Robertson totally ran the show and the home side's frontline did the rest as the visitors never at any stage looked as though they had the ability to get themselves back into the game.

For the Wells City management team of Nathan Truckle and Tom Clifford-Jones they must have been so frustrated to look back and know how ineffective they were in defeat at Hengrove just four days earlier in an important league game, yet to turn in a second half display as good as that is a bit special.

Wells City made the early running and they were denied on seven minutes when both Harry Foster and Alex Camm had goal bound efforts cleared off the line by Mark Armstrong which was quite brilliant and Camm's follow up effort on this occasion saw Jake Llewellyn also complete a goal line clearance.

Llewellyn then came close at the other end of the pitch with a free kick that curled inches over the Wells City crossbar and moments later a Harry Horton free kick floated towards the back post was met by Luke Manley who sent his effort inches beyond the far post.

The home side then responded with a Craig Herrod header from a brilliant Mark Randall cross, before two fine clearances in the space of 30 seconds by Ben Amghar kept the scores level in the opening third of the game.

Randall then found space for the home side 30 yards from goal and his fine effort was well saved low down by Jake Viney before Randall then turned saviour moments later as he tracked back brilliantly to deny Jake Brown from setting up an opportunity.

Leading up to the half time interval Wells City went close once again as Jack Spence with a fine defensive headed clearance found Camm who set up an opportunity for Harry Foster, but the in form striker dragged his right foot effort wide of the target.

Wells City completely dominated the second half and they showed early pointers as a brilliant run and cross from Dale Hunt found the onrushing Foster who volleyed his effort towards the bottom corner of the net where Viney did well to save and moments later yet another brilliant Randall cross was met by Charlie Crook who somehow sent his header over the crossbar from just two yards out.

Wells City eventually got the opening goal they deserved on 70 minutes when a long raking pass from Tom Hill was punched clear by Viney, but with the ball falling to Craig Herrod the wide man did supremely well to half volley the ball back into the bottom corner of the Bridgwater net.

The home side then doubled their advantage with a fine goal as Camm lifted a terrific shot from the right hand side of the visitors' penalty area, his effort finding the far corner of the net, it was virtually a goal created out of nothing.

Wells City then wrapped the game up on 87 minutes as a deep Craig Herrod corner was helped over the line at the back post by Dale Hunt who capped a fine display with a deserved goal to help seal a deserved 3-0 victory.

Wells City will now face either Welton Rovers or Yeovil Town in the semi-finals.

Merv's merit marks: H Wilkinson 6, T Hill 8, M Randall 8, B Amghar 8, J Spence 8, B Robertson 9, C CROOK 9, D Hunt 9, H Foster 7, A Camm 7, C Herrod 8.
