Wells City disappointed their football season has been expunged due to coronavirus crisis
Wells City FC have backed the cancellation of their football season and the results being expunged despite being disappointed that it means they have missed out on a push for promotion.
The Toolstation Western League First Division side were sitting fourth in the table before the coronavirus crisis hit, but will now see this season scrubbed from the record books following the Football Association's decision to call off all the 2019/20 action.
Speaking to Wells Nub News, joint managers Nathan Truckle and Tom Clifford-Jones said: "Obviously we totally understand that the season had to come to an end and everyone's health and safety is a lot more important than any game of football.
"We are disappointed that the season has been instructed as null and void by the FA as it has stopped us from potentially gaining promotion to the Western League Premier Division.
"Saying that, there were always going to be disappointed clubs whichever decision the FA decided to make.
"Despite the disappointment it was a hugely positive season for us as we easily improved on last season's 10th place finish, pushing for promotion with only 12 games remaining and being in the semi final of the Somerset Premier Cup (quarter final match report here).
"We brought in 13 new players this season so it has given them three quarters of a season to only become stronger for next season so despite the disappointment there are plenty of positives to take.
"On a final note we would like to thank all of the lads, our management team and the club for allowing us to work at such a brilliant club.
"A huge thank you to Pete Deverell and Neil Sheppard who have done an incredible job around the ground all season and we know are already working hard to make sure we hit the ground running next season.
"Lastly we would like to thank everyone who has shown support to us this season, your support is our driving force and we hope more of you get involved next season and we can create something special together next season. Everyone stay safe and we hope to see you soon."
A statement from the footballing authorities on Thursday (March 26) said: "The FA and the leagues at steps three to six of the National League System (NLS) have reached a consensus that the 2019/20 season for steps three to six will be ended with immediate effect and all the results will be expunged.
"This will mean no promotion or relegation of clubs between steps three to six or relegation from step two.
"In light of the above, these decisions will also apply to the leagues and clubs who play at step seven of the NLS.
"The FA will continue to assist and support the National League (steps one and two of the NLS) to determine the outcome of its 19/20 season as quickly as possible.
"The planned implementation of the restructure of the NLS will be deferred until the start of the 21/22 season.
"The decisions reached by the NLS leagues will be recommended to the FA board and FA Council for final ratification."
