A trade union has paid an emotional tribute to a bus driver from Wells who sadly died last month.

Glen Newstead was found dead at his home in Everett Close on May 19, and an inquest has been opened into his death.

Malcolm Green, the regional officer for the trade union Unite Bristol, has now paid a moving tribute to Glen, describing him as a "beloved friend".

"To me, Glen was not only a trade union comrade but a very good friend," he said.

"The tragic loss of Glen among his friends and colleagues has been difficult to comprehend - Glen worked tirelessly to support Unite the Union members at his employer, First Group buses in Wells.

"Glen also supported homeless people, food banks and was a strong activist on social matters that affected working class people and the unemployed.

"Glen was an extremely well liked person and whoever he met soon became a friend. Glen was extremely caring and supportive of all people and his loss is greatly felt by people in all walks of life.

"Glen was a staunch socialist and as a member of the Labour Party campaigned for the movement.

"Glen was employed as a bus driver in Wells which he enjoyed but his greatest attribute was his support and representation of Unite the Union members who were both colleagues and friends employed as bus drivers.

"Glen's passing leaves a massive hole in our lives and also within the trade union movement as a senior Unite the Union convenor.

"Glen was a very thoughtful, kind, generous and supportive person to all that knew him. I personally miss him greatly - I have known Glen for more than 20 years.

"RIP a beloved friend, colleague and Unite the Union member."
