Partial Solar Eclipse Viewing Party
Wells Cathedral Green

12 Aug 2026
Wednesday 12 August
Come along and see a celestial showstopper.
Did you know that on August 12th the UK will see the best partial solar eclipse since 1999? The show begins at 18:16 with the first contact when the moon starts to obscure the sun. Maximum coverage of 93% will occur about an hour later with the moon moving away from the disk of the sun at 20:07.
Members of Wells & Mendip Astronomers will be on the Cathedral Green with safely filtered telescopes and eclipse glasses so that you can witness this truly spectacular show for yourself. There'll be activities and information and it's all free.
Of course, this being England, it is possible that the weather will not be favourable. So, if it's really cloudy or raining, we won't be able to see the eclipse. However, light cloud are passing clouds should allow us to see something.
Come along from 3pm and say hello. We will have out telescopes trained in the sun for some solar observing before the main show begins at 18:17.
