Miniature art hidden away in the heart of Wells.
Wells Town Hall is the home of the Hilliard Society's International Miniature Exhibition. The exhibition is a hidden gem that many readers may not have heard about, even though its annual art exhibitions have been taking place in the heart of Wells for over 40 years.
The Hilliard Society was founded by Sue Burton, a gallery owner in Wells, and miniaturist Rosalind Pierson (RMS, HSF, MASF). Its Inaugural Exhibition was held in Wells in May 1982. The name of the society was chosen as Nicholas Hilliard (b.1547) was a prominent Elizabethan miniaturist portrait painter who was born in Exeter.
The art of miniature painting is many hundreds of years old, originally being a way of recording someone's portrait before photography was possible. Miniature paintings and drawings or are generally no larger than 4.5 x 6 inches and sculptures no more than 10 inches.
New artists exhibiting this year include and Eco-artist who some may have seen on national news – Caroline West who paints scenes on used teabags, an artist from the Ukraine and a group of very talented Young Artists. There will also be exhibits from many of The Hilliard Society members with subjects including landscapes, portraits, still life, wildlife and much more. Mediums are broad ranging from pencil crayon, graphite, oil, acrylic, watercolour and vitreous enamel. Spectacular fine detailed bronze sculptures, glass engravings and painted silver boxes.
Come and be inspired! There will be at least one artist demonstrating on each day and entry is free.
If you would like to learn more about miniature painting, the Hilliard Society is offering a unique opportunity to take part in a full day's Miniature Painting Workshop. The intention of the workshop is to introduce the technique of miniature painting to beginners, as well as helping artists who may already have some experience but would like to brush up on their skills or try out new ideas. There will be experienced, award-winning miniaturists on hand to tutor.
The Workshop will take place on Saturday June 7th 2025 from 10.00am – 4.00pm in the Town Hall, Wells. The fee for the whole day is £50 which will include complimentary tea and coffee. To reserve a place and for further information please get in touch.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 7th June and runs until 14th June (10am - 5pm), closed on Sunday 8th June. FREE ENTRY. Artworks will also be available for purchase online.
