The Bishop's Palace in Wells was delighted to welcome the Earl and Countess of Wessex to the historic site today (May 17).

As part of visits by the Earl and Countess to Wells, coinciding with the re-opening of hospitality and tourism businesses, and to discuss plans for a positive future following the effects of the pandemic, Their Royal Highnesses visited the medieval palace and gardens.

Hugging will be allowed from tomorrow

Indoor hospitality venues will reopen and hugging will be allowed as the country moves to the next step out of coronavirus lockdown restrictions tomorrow (May 17).

Significant parts of the hospitality industry will reopen from May 17 and people are being advised to use common sense and personal responsibility rather than government rules when it comes to social distancing, after data confirmed the government's "four tests" for easing Covid restrictions had been met.

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, the team behind the campaign to save St Andrew's Ward in Wells say they have been told it will now not be closed until summer 2022 at the earliest.

St Andrew's is Mendip's last adult mental health ward, and the decision by the Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to close it followed a two and a half-year period of consultation with staff, patients, carers and colleagues in the voluntary sector and people with an interest in mental health to co-create a new model of mental health care for Somerset.
