Award-winning eat: Festivals have been showcasing the very best in local food and drink in the South West since 2012

Mendip District Council will be serving up something special for Wells residents this month, thanks to a new partnership with the multi award-winning eat: Festivals team.

For the first time in Mendip, the popular food and drink events will be delivering four "little eat: Festivals" in Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet during July and August, showcasing around 20 of Somerset's finest local producers.

A major new fund to help farmers and land managers in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has been announced, called Farming in Protected Landscapes.

Through the programme, farmers and land managers can be supported to carry out projects that support nature recovery, mitigate the impacts of climate change, provide opportunities for people to discover, enjoy and understand the landscape and cultural heritage, or support nature-friendly, sustainable farm businesses.

Somerset's district council leaders have written to Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick, to urge that he attaches "sufficient weight" to the result of the local poll, which returned a 65 per cent to 35 per cent vote in favour of the Stronger Somerset plan for two new unitary councils, over the One Somerset rival plan for a single unitary.

The Secretary of State is expected to announce his decision on the future of local government in Somerset before the Parliamentary summer recess begins on July 22.
