Weston Super Mare 2nds 33 – Wells 26.

This was a match that Wells probably thought that they could win and on reflection, felt that they should have won.

However, the seasiders had probably the best pack that Wells have faced this season, plus a set of backs who ran straight and hard, often breaking through the tackle.

In addition, they used the strong wind exceptionally well. Kicking for territory in the first half when it was behind them, but in the second period, retaining possession for long periods.

On a near perfect looking pitch and Wells playing into the strong wind, they found themselves 14 points adrift after just 12 minutes.

Weston were good value for their lead and really had the visitors on the back foot. More than 20 minutes had elapsed before Ben Knight got Wells on the scoreboard following a tap penalty.

However, back came the home team and a powerful drive from a lineout saw their third try, again converted.

With the half running out, Wells' best move of the match so far saw Tom Payne touch down, Aaron Cook converted, so the half time whistle came with Wells just nine points adrift, surely easy to make up with the wind in their favour?

Weston were reduced to 13 men less than 15 minutes into the second half, with two yellow cards in quick succession. Surely now was the time to strike.

Al Payne went over, Will Greenman converted, but Wells were making too many errors and allowed the home team to survive and even go back on the attack.

Then Weston scored a simple try. Wells were forced back in a scrum giving the opposition backs lots of room to run the ball in and then following constant pressure and the clock running down they got their fifth touchdown.

To their credit, Wells did not give up. The clock was showing well over 80 minutes when Ben Knight got Wells' fourth and bonus point try.

Icing on the cake, Will Greenman added the conversion, Wells now within seven points, another bonus point.

This Saturday two home games, Wells play Old Redcliffians 2nds, the Seconds take on Somerton.
