MENDIP District Council's Cabinet has approved an increase in parking charges in council car parks.
Councillor Tom Killen, who was chairing the meeting, said that the increases were necessary so that the council had the funds to keep providing services for the people of Mendip.
PRIMARY school teacher Dan Vidler is embarking on an ambitious project to get every schoolchild in Wells to make a poppy to be planted in front of The Bishop's Palace in time for this year's Remembrance Day.
"I've been planning The Somerset Poppies for 18 months," said Dan, an artist and a teacher at Coxley Primary School.

WHEN Peter Butler drove his treasured MG on to Wells Cathedral Green in the Mendip Vintage & Classic Car Tour it was the end of a particularly long journey.
But of the dozens of drivers parking their vehicles on the Cathedral Green for onlookers to admire, Peter, who lives in Wells, had the biggest smile.
A number of celebratory events and activities are planned to take place during National Volunteers' Week (1-7 June) to thank and honour Somerset's thousands of unsung heroes.
To honour Somerset's volunteers, the volunteering organisation Engage invited the public to submit 'Shining Star' nominations earlier this year. Award ceremonies will now take place in Taunton, 6 June, and Minehead, 8 June, where overall area volunteer winners for Taunton Deane and West Somerset will be announced.

RESIDENTS of Wells snapped up 18 unique stone sculptures on Bank Holiday Monday as Wells Stone Carving Festival culminated in an exciting and competitive live auction outside the Bishop's Barn on Wells Recreation Ground.
The 18 carvings were produced by artists from across the country, including the winner of the European stone carving festival in 2017 and masons from Winchester Cathedral, who had come to compete at the festival by producing a carving in just two and a half days to fit the brief of Medieval England.
