THE winners of this year's Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) international visual arts competition and selling exhibition was announced at a glittering reception held in The Bishop's Palace.

"WAC is playing its part in promoting and presenting contemporary art in a way that is easily accessible.

There are actually seven venues across Wells that are celebrating visual arts throughout October so I think we've been able to show categorically that you don't need to visit a big metropolitan city to see great art," he said.

A SPECIAL award has been given to Derek Cooper for his service to the local community.

The Wells Poppy Appeal organiser and a Wells Royal British Legion committee member for many years, Derek also volunteers with Wells Arthritis Care, helps promote Wells through the city tourism forum, and set up Wells Film Centre in 1992 with his wife June, which his family still run.

A DAY-LONG conference in the Town Hall to discuss the future of Wells has produced a list of action points to improve life in the city and drive its development forward.

They listened to speakers including Dean of Wells the Very Rev Dr John Davies, and joint managing director of the Iceland food chain Richard Walker, and discussed topics in group sessions that ranged from infrastructure and young people to entertainment and sport.
