Search for post office solution

WELLS could end up with two sites near the city centre providing post office services when, as seems likely, the post office in Wells Market Place closes in September.

Since then, Post Office Ltd has had discussions with Wells City Council – which owns the premises – and Wells MP James Heappey to try to find a solution for future post office provision.

A BURGLARY at The Lawrence Centre in Chamberlain Street is one of several incidents in Wells that police are investigating.

2 fire appliances from Street and Glastonbury, together with a water carrier from Bridgwater, were mobilised following a call from a farmer saying they had a an amount of hay on fire in their barn.

Within minutes of the first crew arriving they confirmed this to be the case and set to work extinguishing what turned out to be 6 tonnes of hay involved, inside an open sided metal barn.

Crews made steady progress dragging out the hay, turning it over and damping down, whilst constantly checking for hotspots with a thermal imaging camera. By 21:16hrs the incident was under control and the fire, which started accidentally, was extinguished. Crews used hose reel jets, compressed air foam, drag forks and a thermal imaging camera. The fire was contained to the contents only and duty of care has been left the land owner.

Location: Cheddar Moor Road, Clewer. Wedmore

One Fire Engine from Cheddar, Wells and a Rescue Tender from Glastonbury were all sent to a report of a car that had crashed into a property with possibly somebody still in the vehicle.
On arrival crews confirmed that one private vehicle had collided with a domestic property. The driver of the vehicle was removed from the vehicle prior to the Fire Service attendance. A structural engineer was requested to make sure the building was safe. Fire crews also used props to secure the building. The vehicle was then removed from the building via a winch.
A small gas leak was confirmed and the gas board attended to isolate the mains. The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital by Ambulance.
