THE retail sector in Wells has seen further changes with the opening of two pet shops, and another clothes shop set to open soon.

Natural Pets Of Wells, as the former Thatchers shop is now known, has been opened by Nigel and Heather Derrick, who have run the Columbard Pets shop in Midsomer Norton High Street for almost four years.

THE children of Danny Unwin, who has died at the age of 71, say they will remember with pride their "charming, loyal and very funny" father.

"Dad loved Wells, and was always looking for things to do," said children Becky Lane, Tim Unwin and Karen Hoogesteger.

A NEW vets will be opening in Wells this autumn after five years of planning.

Wells Vets already has strong ties to the community as the main team members have grown up in or around Wells, and all attended Wells Blue School.

THE teenager who had a starring role in hit film Paddington has changed direction by becoming an apprentice at Wells tattoo studio Last Dragon Tattoo.

Other roles have included appearances in Casualty, Being Human and Man Down.

THE chief marshal at Wells Carnival for more than 20 years, Martin Coppell, has vowed to beat the cancer he has been diagnosed with for the sake of his newborn grandson.

"He's my inspiration.

He's my angel," said Martin, aged 57.

3 fire appliances from Shepton Mallet, Wells and Castle Cary were mobilised following a call from the occupant of a property reporting a fire in their living room. All persons were confirmed to be out of the property at the time of call.

On arrival of the first crew from Shepton Mallet, they confirmed all persons had evacuated safely and that the ground floor of the privately owned property was smoke logged, after entering with 2 breathing apparatus wearers (later increased to 4), 1 hose reel jet and a thermal imaging camera.

By 19:10hrs crews confirmed the fire, which had started accidentally, after the door to a wood burning stove had been left open and fire had subsequently spread to stacked logs adjacent to it, was extinguished. They continued to damp the area down and remove debris, before making it safe and finally ventilating with a positive pressure ventilation fan.  

All occupants, an elderly couple and their son, were unharmed and once complete duty of care for the incident was left with them. There was no further fire spread and damage was confined to the living room only.

Location: Mendip Drive, Frome

2 fire appliances from Frome were mobilised following a call from the occupant of a domestic property, reporting that their oven was on fire. Fire Control confirmed at the time of call that all occupants were able to evacuate safely.

Shortly after the first crew arrived on scene and after liaising with the occupiers, they confirmed that a fire extinguisher had been used into the oven prior to our arrival. Crews still investigated to ensure it was fully extinguished, using 2 breathing apparatus and 1 hose reel jet, but once satisfied that it was, made the area safe and cleared the smoke using a positive pressure ventilation fan. Fire damage was minimal, confined to the oven only, and all occupants were safely out the property and found to be in good health.  

This incident is now complete and was brought under control at 18:38hrs. These are the full and final details.

As the number of people diagnosed with Dementia in Somerset rises, Somerset County Council is reviewing how it provides daytime activities and respite for people with Dementia and their carers.

Survey responses suggested some innovative ideas for how services could be delivered in the future.
