The number of Coronavirus cases in Wells has more than doubled in a week, according to official figures.

In the seven days up to March 9, the number of cases rose to 58, up from 31 from the previous week, representing an increase of 114.8%, and it is expected that the figure will be up again when the next round of stats are revealed.

Tourism organisations in Mendip have successfully secured funding from the Mendip Tourism Grant.

Grants of between £3k and £6k were made available from Mendip District Council, to support community organisations or businesses wishing to put in place projects that enhance Mendip as a tourist destination.

New plans for Lidl expansion

Wells could still get a revamped Lidl store if fresh plans are approved by the district council.

The supermarket has now put forward amended proposals for the new store, with a decision expected to be made by the end of spring.

A Somerset detective with 25 years' "exemplary" service has been sacked after sending obscene and abusive text messages to two sexual assault victims. 

The public would be appalled to learn that over a nine-month period in 2019 DC Jon Hooper also drafted sexualised comments about two other vulnerable female victims – that were never sent – "for thrills", a misconduct hearing was told.

Neighbours and community groups looking to hold street parties in June to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee are reminded that the clock is ticking, and to check whether they may need a temporary road closure.

The Council requires 6 weeks to process road closure applications for street parties on no-through roads, and 12 weeks for closures for special events. This means that time is running out for planned celebrations in early June.
