We are now Wells Tuesday WI, as a new sister WI - Wells Monday WI - will meet on the third Monday of each month staring in March. We hope women on our waiting list will take the opportunity to be part of this exciting new adventure and wish President Sharon every success. It's great there is such demand in Wells for the friendship and opportunities that the Women's Institute offers!

President Anne reminded us that April's meeting will include the AGM and encouraged people to consider standing for the committee, and to be ready to propose and second others. Our sculpture made from spectacles, inspired by the campaign to raise awareness of the signs of ovarian cancer, is now on display in a town centre optician's window.

As spring officially arrives – according to meteorologists anyway – Mendip Ramblers are looking forward to lots of walking in dry and sunny weather. Yes, we're optimists!

Recently there has been some good news for all walkers! The requirement that all footpaths must be registered by 2026 has been lifted - we now shouldn't "Lose Our Way". Also there's a realistic hope for the completion of the England Coast Path in 2022 – all 2,700 miles. The Ramblers Association, along with many other charities, have campaigned for this important national asset for many years. It will be the longest managed and way marked coastal path in the world! While the Mendip area doesn't have a coastline it's not too far from the coast in Somerset and North Somerset.

Mendip District Council is urging bill-payers to set up a direct debit to pay their council tax from April, to ensure they get their £150 energy rebate payment as quickly as possible.

In Mendip, around 76% of households pay by direct debit - but it still leaves more than 12,500 households who do not currently pay their council tax through this convenient arrangement.

The Wells Ambassadors have relaunched following a winter break and a "Welcome Back" reception with drinks and snacks at the Town Hall, hosted by the city council, when their new blue gilets were introduced and tried on.

The Ambassadors welcome visitors, tell them all about the city's attractions, answer their questions and hand out free maps of Wells.

Flapjack eating devotees have helped a shop in Wells donate £685.30 to Wells Cathedral.

Flapjackery, which is located in the centre of the town, specialises in selling hand-made artisan gluten-free flapjacks and sweet treats. Since it opened in June last year, it has donated £1.50 for every 'Wells' box sold - a delicious range of six chunky flapjacks - as well as 20p from everyone who opted not to take their flapjacks away in a recyclable box.

Local groups, organisations and residents in the Chew Valley are invited to the next virtual Chew Valley Area Forum on Monday February 28 at 6pm.

The meeting will include speakers from BANES Citizen's Advice Bureau and the Council's Welfare Teams, an update on the work of the Climate and Nature Emergency Group as well as demonstration on the use of parish online digital mapping tool.

More than 100 members of the community, young and old, have pledged to 'sleep out' for one night on Friday, March 4 as part of Julian House's annual Big Bath Sleep-Out fundraising event. Local families and friendship groups are choosing to sleep out in Alice Park in Bath or at home in their own gardens to raise much needed funds and awareness for Julian House's lifesaving services.

However, the charity is urging more members of the community to step forward and take part.
