Our teenage rock and pop bands are not short of talent but they do lack opportunities to play at public venues.

So 11 mid-Somerset acts were delighted to perform for an appreciative paying audience.

They choose a wide range of songs from original numbers to their own versions of Oasis, Nirvana, the Beatles, Radiohead and Pink Floyd hits.

The venue was Cedars Hall in Wells and the occasion was the second Mayor's Concert.

The performers came from Wells Blue, the largest school in Somerset with students from a huge area, Wells Cathedral School which attracts day pupils from across the county and boarders from across the world, as well as Strode College in Street.

The original Mayor's Concert in 2022 was proposed to encourage more cooperation between the city's two great schools by the then Mayor of Wells Philip Welch and it has become an annual celebration of our young people's talent.

Strode were also invited to join for 2023 and further expansion is planned for 2024's concert.

During the interval on Friday there was a speech about PROMISEWorks, the charity of Stewart Cursley, the current Mayor of Wells, by volunteer Joanna Davey.

She explained that the charity recruits, trains and supports volunteers to provide one-to-one mentoring to help improve the mental health, and well-being of some of Somerset's most vulnerable young people, aged from five to 25.

Cllr Cursley said: "It is good to see local schools coming together to support the charity – by young people, for young people'

There was a collection for PROMISEWorks as the audience left.
