Work has started to plant 100 new trees at a Wells beauty spot.

Employees from Mendip District Council, working alongside grounds and maintenance contractors, Idverde, met at Tor Hill Lane, to prepare the area.

A misty Mendip morning didn't deter the team from their mission – to tackle climate change, encourage wildlife and enhance the local environment.

A combination of beech, hazel, field maple and oak saplings were planted. The "tree whips" were gifted to the council by Idverde to mark the company's 100th year.

The green scheme is just one of many planned in coming months. The council is actively exploring other locations across the district suitable for similar initiatives, and are in conversation with experts at the Woodland Trust to determine the most appropriate species of trees and planting schemes to embark on.

Earlier this year, a Climate and Ecological Emergency was declared at Mendip, as councillors from the district council made a commitment to take care of the environment, leaving it in a good condition for generations to come and lead the way for Mendip to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Leader of Mendip District Council, Cllr Ros Wyke, said: "Responding to climate change is a top priority for us, but urgent action is needed.

"One of those actions, which we can implement quickly, is tree provision – now and for the future. That's why the green scheme at Tor Hill Lane, is a small, yet highly significant start.

"We recognise there is much we need to do as a council, but we must also encourage and support our residents, businesses, and especially our young people, to enable them to take the necessary steps needed to make a real impact."
