29th Oct 2023 | Local News
Winter is just around the corner, and it's essential for Wells residents to consider getting their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
These jabs are particularly important for people at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms.
Who should get vaccinated?
The NHS is offering flu and COVID-19 jabs for the following groups:
- Those who are 65 or older (including those turning 65 by 31 March 2024)
- People with certain health conditions or learning disabilities
- Pregnant women
- Individuals living with someone who has a weakened immune system
- Carers
- Frontline health or social care workers
- Residents of care homes
Additionally, children who were aged 2 or 3 on 31 August 2023, as well as school-aged children from Reception to Year 11 with specific health conditions, are eligible for the children's flu vaccine.
How to get your jab
If you're eligible for the NHS flu jab, you can:
- Schedule an appointment with your GP
- Find a pharmacy offering NHS flu jabs if you're 18 or older
- Book online or via the NHS App if you're 18 or older
For the COVID-19 vaccine, appointment booking is available online, and walk-in options are also at hand. People aged 12 and up can book without an invitation.
Staying warm this winter
Winter can be harsh for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, those with long-term health conditions, and low-income households. It's advised to keep your home's temperature at 18°C or higher in rooms you frequently use. Assistance for energy-efficient home improvements and help with heating bills is available through various grants and benefits.
When to seek medical advice
If you're part of an at-risk group and start to feel unwell, seek medical guidance right away. Help is available from pharmacists, GPs, and NHS 111 for both minor illnesses and urgent healthcare needs.
Looking out for neighbours and family
It's important to check on vulnerable neighbours and family members to ensure they have sufficient food and medication. If icy conditions are making it difficult for them to go out, consider offering your help.
