Wells has officially welcomed its new mayor.

Cllr Denise Denis has been sworn in as the 652nd Mayor of Wells following the traditional Mayor Making service on Saturday, 16 May 2026.

Cllr Sarah Powell is serving as Deputy Mayor for the 2026–27 civic year.

Both councillors were unanimously chosen for the roles at February's Full City Council meeting.

Wells City Council said: "Wells City Council would like to formally announce The Right Worshipful the Mayor, Cllr Denise Denis, as the 652nd Mayor of Wells.

"Congratulations Mr Mayor, from all councillors and staff of the council."

Cllr Denis said she was delighted and honoured to take on the role.

She said: "It is a delight and an honour to be considered as the next Mayor of Wells and I look forward to taking on the role with pride following the official service."

The new mayor takes over from Cllr Louis Agabani, whose term has now ended.

Cllr Agabani had said: "I know that the role of Mayor will be in good hands for the next year and look forward to supporting Cllr Denis in the hand over of the position from May."

His year in office included support for community projects, including the Wells Skatepark Project.

The skatepark team thanked him for championing wheeled sports, supporting fundraising and helping promote the planned new skatepark.

One fundraising highlight was a skateboard art auction organised with Wells Art Contemporary.

The project team said it is now heading towards the £250,000 milestone in money raised and pledged.

The Mayor of Wells acts as the city's first citizen, representing the community at civic ceremonies, charity events and official engagements across the year.

Further details about Cllr Denis's chosen charity for her mayoral year have not yet been confirmed.
