Wells town crier Len Sweales is preparing to retire after 25 years of service to the city.

Len, one of Wells' best-known civic figures, is due to make his final cry at midday on Saturday, 16 May.

The moment will mark the end of a long chapter for the city's official town crier, who was appointed in 2001.

Wells City Council has said Len will retire in May 2026 after an "extraordinary 25 years of service".

He is also due to be awarded the Freedom of the City of Wells in July.

Before moving to Wells, Len had a long career with the London Fire Brigade.

He retired in 1997 at the rank of divisional officer and moved to Wells from Camberley, Surrey, in October 2000.

Wells City Council announced last year that Philip Dickson would become the city's new town crier, following in Len's footsteps.
