More than 80 people flocked to the Connect Centre last Saturday to enjoy the return of the Wells Independents' quarterly SOUP! lunches – a welcome sign perhaps that life in Wells is returning to near normal.

And to celebrate the occasion, four of Wells' most recognised community groups were the ones competing for the largest cheque of the day.

First up was the Wells Theatre Festival, also making a welcome return this year with 45 performances over four days from July 7 to 10. A highlight will be Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in front of the Cathedral and there will be something for every age and taste. Kids can come free too.

Claire Chettoe spoke about Wells Dementia Action Alliance, reminding the audience of the devastating effect of dementia on both sufferers and carers and of the range of services they offer in support. They were looking for money to restart music therapy sessions, which has a special way of getting through to sufferers.

Project Factory, the instigators of the well-loved lantern processions and Wells community days, whose purpose is to bring the community together through events and dialogue, were presented by Ann Whalley. Their work ranges across a wide spectrum including arts and the community, like open air performances and education activity by Opera Brava this year.

Finally, Rev. Sue Marland spoke about the work of the Wells Food Bank who provided many thousands of free meals every week during lockdown and continue to do so as the effects of inflation, rising energy bills and general food poverty hit home.

The patrons then voted on how they thought the award fund of £700, including generous match funding from Bowley's Garage and the £5 they each paid for their lunch, should be shared. Top prize of £350 went to Wells Dementia Action Alliance with the other three receiving £118 each. The lunch ingredients were provided by Waitrose, Morrisons and Burns the Bread. Santé Wines provided the wines, Mickey in the Saturday market the flowers on the tables. The Connect Centre staff prepared the soup and WIN's Ross Young, the organiser went home afterwards, tired but happy.
