Shoplifting in Wells city centre remains a 2026 priority for local police, with Wells High Street identified as a particular hotspot. The priority was agreed and updated on 4 June 2026 by the Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Police said shoplifting is having a negative impact on businesses, staff and public confidence in the city centre. Wells High Street has been highlighted because of its concentration of shops and footfall, which police say makes it more vulnerable to repeat offending.

The Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team said persistent shoplifting affects livelihoods and creates fear and frustration for staff. It said the issue can also contribute to wider antisocial behaviour if it is not addressed.

In response, the team is maintaining a focused approach to deter offences, identify offenders and support retailers. Police said the priority reflects ongoing concerns raised by local businesses and the wider community.

The work includes regular high-visibility patrols by the Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team and Special Constables. Additional officers are also being deployed after Wells High Street was identified as a priority location under the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee.

Police said they are continuing to engage with local businesses to improve information sharing and joint problem-solving. The latest action, recorded on 4 June 2026, included continued patrols in the High Street and visits to various businesses.

The team said: "We are working with businesses to reduce the occurrences of shop theft."

Police said work in 2025 included multi-agency meetings, targeted high-visibility patrols by neighbourhood teams and the arrest and charging of individuals for shoplifting offences. The team said it plans to build on that work through 2026.
