Wells sets out emergency plan for floods and power cuts
By Laura Linham 13th Oct 2026
Wells has a new plan for dealing with floods, power cuts and other major emergencies, with door-to-door checks among the options if online communications fail. Wells City Council announced the adoption of its Community Resilience Plan on Monday, 12 October.
The plan brings together volunteers, community organisations and local resources to support residents, businesses and visitors during a major incident. It covers flooding, severe weather, power outages, fire and water supply failures.
The council will work alongside emergency services and partner agencies to coordinate local help. The aim is to make use of the knowledge, skills and resources already available in Wells so the community is better prepared when an emergency happens.
Keeping people informed is a central part of the plan. Updates will be shared through the council's website and social media channels, with partner organisations also helping to pass on information.
If digital channels cannot be accessed, the council may use printed notices and door-to-door checks instead. It says information will be coordinated with partner agencies to help tackle rumours and misinformation.
Residents are being encouraged to prepare their households, know where to find reliable updates and support local community organisations. Practical advice is available on the council's Community Resilience Plan page.
Separately, Wells Rotary, supported by EVAG, is offering flood resilience support kits to homes vulnerable to flooding. Residents who think their home could benefit can contact Wells Rotary through its website to arrange an appointment.
The plan is intended for major incidents affecting the wider community. It supports the emergency services' response and does not replace their role or arrangements for individual household emergencies.
