Wells Queen Street building could become café and flats

A building in Wells city centre could be turned into a café with homes above under plans now being considered by Somerset Council.

The application for 8 Queen Street, Wells, proposes converting the ground floor of the existing commercial premises into a café, alongside changes to the upper floors for residential use.

The scheme also includes a loft conversion with a rear dormer extension. A commercial kitchen extraction and ventilation system would also be installed as part of the plans.

Plans submitted with the application include proposed floor layouts and elevations, along with details of the kitchen extraction equipment and an odour control strategy.

The proposal would retain a commercial use at ground-floor level while creating or reconfiguring residential space above. The application covers internal alterations as well as the external dormer extension needed for the loft conversion.

Queen Street runs between the High Street and Chamberlain Street and forms part of the city centre's mix of shops, food businesses, services and homes.

People can comment on the application (reference 2026/1378/FUL) until Wednesday, 7 October, before Somerset Council reaches a decision.
