In an initiative aimed at making Wells more accessible for all, a comprehensive survey examining the state of the city's pavements, particularly their suitability for less able users, is set to widen its scope beyond the city centre.

This effort follows a detailed report compiled by Wells residents Theo van Hensbergen, Bob Payne, and Brian Clarke, the latter of whom relies on a wheelchair for mobility. Their investigation into the central pavements highlighted numerous issues concerning both the surfaces and the overall design of the pavement network, sparking the "Proper Pavements for Wells" campaign advocating for necessary enhancements.

The responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of these pavements lies with Somerset Council. The findings of the initial report were presented to council members at a public demonstration held outside Wells Town Hall on 21 December, with Theo van Hensbergen further elaborating on the findings at a Wells City Council meeting that evening.

Building on this momentum, van Hensbergen is now calling on the community, especially those who use mobility aids or have impaired vision, to contribute their experiences and insights for a survey focusing on the outskirts of Wells.

Residents who wish to share their experiences or participate in the survey are encouraged to reach out via the dedicated email: [email protected].
