Wells named top-three UK city for dog walks
By Laura Linham 13th May 2026
Wells has been named one of the best cities in the UK for dog walking.
The city came third in the new Agria Dog Walk Index, published on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, while Somerset was named the top county.
Agria Pet Insurance said Wells scored highly because of its mix of green spaces, dog-friendly food and drink venues and nearby countryside.
The insurer highlighted routes and areas including the West Mendip Way and the Mendip Hills.
Wells finished behind Chichester in first place and Truro in second.
Bath, also in Somerset, was ranked joint fourth alongside Ripon and Salisbury.
Agria said the index used online search data, proximity to green spaces, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Trust sites, as well as dog-friendly amenities.
The top 10 cities were Chichester, Truro, Wells, Bath, Ripon, Salisbury, Chester, York, Stirling and Southampton.
The index has been released alongside Agria's annual Dog Walk event, which is running throughout May.
For every dog signed up to the free campaign, Agria says it will donate £5 to be shared between five UK animal rescue organisations.
Vicki Wentworth, managing director at Agria Pet Insurance, said the index showed how places such as Wells and Somerset offer "accessible green space and safe, stimulating places to explore".
She said the annual dog walk campaign was a way to celebrate the bond between dogs and their owners while supporting rescue organisations.
Dog owners taking part are being encouraged to plan walks responsibly, keep dogs under control near roads, livestock and other people, and take care around hazards including cliff edges and open water.
