A recent study comparing the accessibility of UK cities has crowned Wells as the most accessible city in the country, while Bradford was ranked the least accessible.

The study, carried out by Handicare in partnership with Age Co, which took into account factors such as accessible attractions, parking locations, restaurants, and hotels, found that Wells, despite being one of the UK's smallest cities, had the best proportion of accessible attractions and parking locations compared to its population size.

Despite being one of the UK's smallest cities, Wells gained the top spot as it boasts one of the best proportions of accessible attractions (32 in total) and accessible parking locations (four in total) compared to the size of its population. There are also 19 accessible restaurants and three accessible hotels in the city – making it a great destination for visitors who struggle with mobility.

Chichester in West Sussex and Ely were named the second and third most accessible cities, respectively.

England had seven of the top ten most accessible cities, while Scotland had two and Northern Ireland had one. The study also found that London, despite its large number of accessible facilities, ranked among the bottom five least accessible cities in the UK due to its poor proportion of accessible attractions and activities compared to its population size.

The study highlights the importance of ensuring that those with disabilities are respected, included, and catered for in cities across the UK. With an estimated 14.6 million people in the UK having a disability, accounting for about 22% of the entire population, improving accessibility should be a high priority.

When looking at the average accessibility score for each country in the UK, Northern Ireland came out on top, with cities that are more accessible than those in England, Scotland, and Wales on average.
