Wells has been named the top UK city break destination for 2020 by consumer rights organisation Which?

The group asked readers to rate the food, accommodation, sights and attractions, and value for money at destinations across the UK.

Wells came out on top of all the cities in the UK, with a Which? City Score of 86 per cent, two per cent higher than Edinburgh, Liverpool and York.

A Which? spokesperson said: "Plum on the central green perches Wells Cathedral, an epic endeavour of ecclesiastical architecture raised as England's first Gothic cathedral between 1175 and 1490.

"Alongside runs Vicars' Close, one of the only intact residential medieval streets left in Britain, with moated Bishop's Palace close by.

"All that adds up to the full five stars for Wells' cultural attractions. Better still, it's walkable: England's smallest city has a historic core that's hardly a mile wide."

The average rate for a hotel room in Wells was £82 according to Which? with readers giving the city five stars out of five for Value for Money.

Accommodation and Cultural Sights And Attractions each received four stars, while Food And Drink came in at three stars.
