Wells museum makes moves to unlock funding
By Laura Linham 24th Jun 2026
Wells Museum has taken two financial steps aimed at strengthening its future, with a new visitor offer and its first accounts signed off as a Community Interest Company. The museum is piloting a scheme which gives Wells Cathedral visitors half-price entry to the museum.
The move is designed to encourage more people already visiting the city centre to explore the museum as part of their day in Wells. The offer links two of the city's key heritage attractions, with the museum hoping the pilot will help bring more people through its doors.
The museum has also signed off its accounts for its first year operating as a Community Interest Company. The change in status is expected to help the museum apply for more grants, including larger funding pots.
The financial moves come as local museums and heritage organisations continue to look for sustainable ways to cover running costs, improve facilities and attract new visitors. For Wells Museum, the CIC structure is a practical step towards building a stronger funding base.
The museum says the new position should allow it to pursue more ambitious grant applications. That could prove important as it looks to support its collections, exhibitions and wider role in the cultural life of the city.
The half-price Cathedral visitor offer is being run as a pilot scheme.
