Wells markets set to rake in nearly £195k
By Laura Linham 20th Mar 2026
Wells markets are on course to bring in almost £195,000 this financial year, with council figures showing a surplus of about £127,000.
The figures were revealed at Wells City Council's annual parish meeting after a question was raised about the budget for market provision.
In response, the Town Clerk said the market budget is listed in the monthly cash book under cost centre 207.
The council's forecast for 2025-26 shows market income of £195,104 and expenditure of £68,541. That leaves an expected surplus of £126,563.
The biggest share of the income is forecast to come from Wells' two main market days. Saturday markets are expected to bring in £78,901, while Wednesday markets are forecast at £80,220.
Further income is also expected from Christmas and event markets, indoor markets and target markets held on evenings or Sundays.
The figures were read out during the open forum section of the meeting at Wells Town Hall on Wednesday, 11 March, after a written question asked whether £64 was still the annual budget for market provision.
The Town Clerk told the meeting the market income now forecast is above the originally referenced budget figure of £64,000.
The market figures were among a series of finance questions raised on the night, but stood out as one of the clearest headline numbers from the meeting.
