A hidden garden in Wells will open to visitors for one day only as part of the National Garden Scheme. The Rib, in St Andrew Street, will welcome visitors on Saturday, 25 July 2026, from noon to 5 pm.

The garden is attached to one of the city's most historically striking houses, with Wells Cathedral and a sacred well in its garden. Organisers say the compact garden delivers a strong architectural and historical setting, with long-established trees, shrubs and mixed borders framing the view.

The National Garden Scheme listing describes The Rib as a privately owned medieval canonical hall house at the east end of Wells Cathedral. It says the garden is dominated by the cathedral, including views of the Lady Chapel and Chapter House.

Visitors can expect an ancient walled orchard, a traditionally planted cottage garden and dozens of pots adding colour and impact. The garden also features roses, established planting and a town garden setting.

The opening is being held for charity through the National Garden Scheme, which gives visitors access to private gardens across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. The scheme raises money for nursing and health charities through garden admissions.

Admission for The Rib is £6 for adults, with children admitted free. The National Garden Scheme says pre-booking is available, and the venue is cashless.

Visitors are advised that there is no parking at or very near the city garden. The National Garden Scheme recommends using one of Wells' public car parks and walking through the city to The Rib.

The Rib garden opening takes place at The Rib, St Andrew Street, Wells, on Saturday, 25 July 2026, from noon to 5 pm. More details are available from the National Garden Scheme listing for The Rib.
