Wells golf course could help protect homes from flooding

Wells Golf Club's course could help protect homes from flooding under plans to hold back rainwater before it reaches streets downhill.
Councillors will consider a £20,000 funding bid on Thursday, 22 October, to help develop the scheme.
The proposed Somerset Rivers Authority grant would fund surveys and technical drawings. A council report says the golf club would then fund changes to the course itself.
The aim is to reduce flood risks around Tor Street and Tor Hill Lane, where properties have flooded during heavy rainfall. The course could accommodate a significant volume of water, according to the report.
Wells City Council would apply on behalf of the Knapp Hill Catchment Partnership and manage any grant received. Neither the funding nor construction has yet been approved.
The proposal builds on earlier investigations into the area's watercourses. A Somerset Rivers Authority study published in its 2019–20 annual report examined flooding around Knapp Hill and Bath Road.
That study traced St Andrew's Stream from Haydon Drove through Biddle Combe and Beryl Wood before it crosses Bath Road. It then flows through Wells Golf Club and towards Tor Hill, eventually continuing towards the Bishop's Palace after joining other watercourses.
The investigation identified several possible improvements, including ponds to temporarily store water in Beryl Wood and Tor Hill park.
It also suggested additional road gullies on Bath Road and further investigations into Wells' complex springs and underground flows.
