The Wells Environment Network is launching EcoWeek+ on October 11, a ten-day series of events aimed at inspiring local residents to take action on environmental issues.

From food sustainability to flood resilience, the event will feature workshops, talks, and activities focused on creating a greener, more sustainable Wells.

Local MP Tessa Munt has thrown her support behind EcoWeek+, describing it as an important initiative for the community to address local environmental challenges.

"We've all seen the impact of extreme weather, flooding, and declining wildlife," said Ms Munt. "It's time to take action right here in Wells to protect our natural environment."

What's on the agenda for EcoWeek+?

The schedule includes a variety of events that are set to draw people from all over the city:

  • Securing Our Food Future: Local farmers and food producers will share their experiences of the challenges they face, and discuss new ways to grow food sustainably.
  • Flood Resilience Workshop: Run by 'Flood Mary', a flood expert, this workshop will offer practical advice for residents on how to protect their homes from future flooding.
  • The Importance of Bees: Renowned bee advocate Brigit Strawbridge will talk about the vital role bees play in the ecosystem and how we can support them.
  • Build a Bug Hotel: A fun, family-friendly activity where you can build a bug hotel and learn why insects are crucial for maintaining a balanced environment.
  • Tech Amnesty: Got old gadgets lying around? Bring your old phones and laptops to the Tech Amnesty collection point to be recycled responsibly.
  • Guided Nature Walks: Join local experts for nature walks around Wells to explore the area's diverse plant and animal life.
  • Hands-on Workshops and Demonstrations: From using the iNaturalist app to track wildlife, to eco-friendly home improvements, and simple bike maintenance, there will be plenty of opportunities to learn and get involved.

Creating a greener future for Wells

The Wells Environment Network believes that community engagement is key to tackling local environmental problems. "The issues we're facing, like flooding and the loss of wildlife, are serious—but together we can make a difference," said one of the organisers.

EcoWeek+ is part of a wider movement to encourage more sustainable living in Wells and beyond. For the full schedule and more information on how to get involved, visit the Wells Environment Network website at wenvironment.org.uk or email: [email protected].

So, whether you're a keen gardener, a tech enthusiast looking to recycle old devices, or just want to learn more about creating a sustainable future, EcoWeek+ has something for everyone.
