Wells gathers in remembrance as city honours the fallen
By Laura Linham 8th Nov 2026
Wells came together on Sunday, 8 November, to remember the servicemen and women who have given their lives in conflict, and to reflect on all those who have served and continue to serve.
The morning began with a service at St Cuthbert's Church at 10.15am. Residents and visitors were then invited to join the city's act of remembrance, which continued at the War Memorial.

At 11am, Wells observed the two-minute silence. Wreaths were laid at the memorial in tribute to those who did not return from war and to the generations whose lives were shaped by conflict.
The silence was followed by the parade along the High Street. Featuring the Wells Civic Party, it brought the city's remembrance into its streets, with the Mayor of Wells taking the salute alongside the Civic Party at the midway point.

From there, the parade continued to Brown's Gate and on to the Harry Patch Memorial, honouring the memory of the former soldier and one of the last surviving British veterans of the First World War.

The ceremony offered people in Wells a chance to remember together: those lost in conflict, the courage of those who served, and the continuing commitment of today's Armed Forces. The tribute was shared across the city, from the service at St Cuthbert's to the wreaths laid at the War Memorial and the parade's passage through the High Street.
