A Wells garage has been crowned a national winner after impressing judges with its green credentials.

Bowleys Garage has been named the 2025 winner of TotalEnergies' 'Fit for the Future' award, which recognises independent workshops making their businesses more sustainable. The announcement was made on Tuesday, February 18.

Now in its third year, the award celebrates garages across the UK that are cutting their environmental impact. Bowleys received a Quartz prize bundle worth £5,000 to support further sustainable improvements.

Judges praised the Wells business for its waste oil recycling scheme, under which used oil is collected, re-refined and redistributed for reuse – including as heating oil for schools.

The garage has also switched to 100 per cent recyclable containers for the oil and lubricants it stocks, including the Quartz range by TotalEnergies.

This year's competition attracted nominations from garages introducing measures such as carbon footprint reduction, electric vehicle installations, recycling programmes and renewable energy investments.

Entries were assessed by a judging panel including representatives from TotalEnergies' lubricants division, Motor Parts Direct and Alliance Automotive Group.

David Valentyne, business development manager at TotalEnergies Marketing UK, said choosing a winner had not been straightforward.

"Bowleys Garage showcase how an independent workshop can deliver sustainable changes with benefits for its customers, the environment and the business," he said.

He added that the company was committed to supporting workshops embracing circular and lower-impact practices.

Kevin Blazey, head of marketing at Motor Parts Direct, said workshops were "racing to keep up with environmental changes" driven by manufacturers, regulation and customer demand.

He said the award highlighted garages "leading by example".
