Shoppers, businesses and stall-holders have declared the festive street market in Wells a resounding success that ended their 2019 trading year on a high.

The outdoor event attracted a record numbers of traders to the city - with crowds to match. More than 130 stalls featured, offering a feast of food and drink, and great gift ideas for seasonal shoppers.

Held on December 14 and 21, the Christmas in Wells market experience was organised by Mendip District Council, in collaboration with Wells City Council, the Bishop's Palace and local community groups.

The remodelled market was different to previous years, as it connected the street market in the city centre to the Bishop's Palace Green, creating a mega-market for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Stall holders at Greys Liqueurs said: "This year's Christmas Market was brilliant.

"We had very successful trading days and we would definitely want to participate next year. It was exactly the right mix and in keeping with the spirit of Wells."

Traders at Matney's Shed said: "It was a great market, well organised, and a gorgeous location."

And the team at Herbes et Epices, thanked everyone for a "fantastic Christmas Market in Wells".

Cllr Nick Cottle, portfolio holder for neighbourhood services, said: "We've seen traders and local businesses thrive as a result of our remodelled market, and customers have been delighted with the range of goods on offer.

"The changes have seen a significant increase in footfall to not only the event, but also the High Street shops."

Planning is starting early Christmas in Wells 2020. If you have an experience of the market you'd like to share, or any suggestions for improvements, you can email [email protected].
