Look through the programme for this year's Wells Festival of Literature and you will find all sorts of contrasting events.

Nostalgia for the past, warnings about the future. Heart-warming descriptions of the power of love, a chilling reminder of the power of the powerful.

Take two examples:

Alison Weir is one of the country's leading historians with a reputation for meticulous research.

Her portrayal of Anna of Kleve, who became Henry VIII's fourth wife, brings to life in vivid detail this charming and spirited woman who died almost five centuries ago. Anna of Kleve: Queen of Secrets will be at 4.15pm on Sunday October 20.

At the other end of the spectrum is Jim Al-Khalili, one of the most respected scientists of his generation and best known for his much-loved science programmes on BBC.

A man of fact, no question, but one who has turned his hand (and exceptional knowledge) to fiction.

Sunfall is set in 2041 and tells the thrilling story of a race against time to stop the world grinding to a halt.

Jim Al-Khalili will be discussing this all-too-possible scenario with David Lister at 3.45pm on Saturday October 26.

There are plenty of contrasting events happening between October 18 and 26, each one distinctly different, but all equally distinctive.
